TORTURE INSTRUMENTS THROUGH THE AGES, FROM MUSEO DELLA TOSCANA, NOW OPENING AT IMAS

Amnesty International, Human Rights Associations, and the United Nations have supported the effort from Museo della Toscana in Florence, Italy to create a conscience in society about the pain human beings can inflict to their own. Torture is not solely a Medieval practice, as it continues even today. The exhibit includes objects designed not only to destroy human beings, but also to subdue societies.

Included in this exhibit are the infamous devices the Iron Maiden, the Guillotine, and the Rack; every object on view a representation of the power of science as twisted by the wills of the intolerant. A vast corpus of knowledge on anatomy and physics was vital to inflicting the most amount of pain over the most amount of time with the least amount effort put forth by the unforgiving.

Torture Instruments Through the Ages initiates its thought-provoking exposition at IMAS, on Saturday, February 9th, 2008 and will expire December 2008. A special admission fee, plus general admission for non-members, to this exhibition is required for adults of $12.00, for seniors of $10.00, and for minors of $8.00.

On Saturday, February 23rd, 2008 from 2pm-4pm, IMAS will host a presentation and discussion from Dr. Manuel Balbona and Rev. Sharmin DeMoss of the Center for Survivors of Torture, North Texas Office. Dr. Balbona and Rev. DeMoss will focus on the types of torture still present in the world today in addition to the physical, mental, and spiritual rehabilitation faced by the survivors of torture. The presentation will enable the audience to understand what torture is, how to prevent it and finally, how to aid in the healing. The presentation/discussion will be included in the general admission fee.

IMAS requires all visitors under the age of 16 to be accompanied at all times by a parent or legal guardian.
